Football Power Shot Technique How To Shoot A Football Perfectly. In this article, we are covering the proper football power shot technique using your laces.

We are going to break these articles up into a few parts. First, we are going to cover basic techniques on how to strike a ball and other factors that will help you strike the ball more cleanly with power and accuracy.

After, we will look at a few more subtle things you need to keep in mind some tweaks you can make to make this technique even more effective and even more consistent.
3. Deliberate Practices
Lastly, we’ll look at practices you can do deliberately to work on this technique, so you’re firing them into the back of the net in no time. Are you ready? Let’s go.
The technique behind a power shot is fairly simple, made of a few components. We want to keep a few key things in mind. First, our approach to the ball, second, our body position, third, our plant foot.
Then, as the strike actually occurs, we want to focus on where contact happens on our foot, where contact occurs on the ball, locking our ankle, and of course, the follow-through.
How you approach the ball can actually vary. There are many ways to do a power shot, however, to just keep it simple, you want the ball a little out of your feet.
If you approach it, and you were too close, you won’t give yourself enough space to strike the ball well. Same with the ball being too far away from you. If it’s too close or you are reaching for it because your approach is off, you won’t hit it cleanly.
Your body position is going to be key, mainly whether you are leaning back or over the ball.
Leaning too far back will encourage you to hit the bottom of the ball, which is just going to cause the ball to fly over the bar. Try and keep your chest over the ball or at least level.
Now, you can get away with leaning back slightly, but for now, let’s just focus on getting that chest over the ball and keeping it down.
You want your plant foot to be next to the ball. Now I’m not saying right on the ball, but a little off to the side. You can have your plant foot aiming towards where you want the ball to go– and this does work and is common practice– but you can also work on techniques where you reverse it, and it doesn’t go in the same direction that your plant foot is facing.
Just make sure your plant foot isn’t too far behind the ball or too far in front of it. OK. Now we’re going to take a look at what should be happening when we actually make contact with the ball.
This is the big moment, this is key. Everything we have done up until this point is to make sure that it is more likely that we strike the ball well so that it goes where we want it to go and so that we generate power. First, let’s look at where on your foot the ball should be making contact.
Now, this is crucial– hit it with a certain part of our foot, and the ball will go nowhere or have no aim. Hit it with other parts, and it will fly into the net accurately.
So there are a few different areas, but we are going to focus on the most common one– and in my eyes, the most effective area. And that is the big bone on the side of your foot next to your laces, usually.
It’s the most dense part of your foot. If you can strike the ball here while keeping your ankle locked in place and your toes pointed down, you are going to hit the ball very sweetly.
The higher up your foot, the more dense this becomes, so hitting on this part just below your ankle I have found to be the sweetest spot for me. But be sure to experiment for yourself.
Even if we hit the ball with the right spot on our foot, if we hit the ball in the wrong place, you’re just not going to get any power or accuracy on it. So if you hit the ball on the top, it will bounce into the ground, and you’ll lose a lot of power, which is exactly what we don’t want when shooting from distance.
If you hit it too far on the bottom, the ball is going to be going into row Z. The closer to the middle of the ball you hit it, the better– and this can even generate knuckle when a few other conditions are met.
But it can also be a little lower or higher from the middle, and you’ll still be fine. In fact, this can lead to different types of shots. So if you hit it in this general area with good technique, you will hit the ball cleanly and sweetly.
Now I did mention this a bit earlier, but you need to lock your ankle when performing this technique. Now, what does this mean? Well, you need to have your toes pointing down and your ankle locked in place when you make contact with the ball.
This is something you can learn fairly quick with practice, and it will make a huge difference in your shooting. Now I’ve already made so many videos going over this, so I’m just going to link a card up top of this video that you can go check out, and I’ll also put it in the description.
So go check out those videos if you need help with this specific skill– locking your ankle– after you’re done finishing this video. Finally, there’s your follow through. Now your follow through– like your run up and many other things you do before actually making contact– is to encourage good contact.
The fact of the matter is if you strike the ball well, it doesn’t matter how you run up or how you follow through. However, the reason I emphasize the run up and follow through is because doing it properly encourages good technique and contact.
Sure, you can get lucky and hit it well with a poor run up and a poor follow through– but that won’t happen often or consistently. So there are really just two follow throughs– I want you to focus on for now. And honestly, these are the only two you’ll ever need, although you can experiment with more.
First is where you either keep your foot planted or you drag it slightly behind you after making contact. The second is where you strike to the ball and jump up, ideally landing on your kicking foot.
Experiment with both, but I found both of them incredibly useful in different situations. Now let’s go over a couple of subtle things I also want you to keep in mind. Now, these you will need to constantly remind yourself of until they become automatic, but it will be worth it. First, mentally aim.
This sounds silly, but it works. If you actually mentally aim in your head, your body tends to follow. I can’t tell you, for example, how many times I’ve mentally aimed for a free kick and my body followed my mind, and I put it exactly where I pictured.
Next, don’t try and crush the ball. I know this is a power shot tutorial, but one of the most common mistakes I see among players learning to shoot– or even players who have been doing it for a while– is trying to hit the ball too hard by swinging too quickly.
The power will not come from this– the power will actually come from how sweetly you strike the ball. Technique over power is always the rule of thumb. Lastly, let’s go over some practices that will help you learn this effectively and efficiently. First, we want to strictly work on technique, technique, technique.
Because of this, just going to the goal and shooting over and over again from distance isn’t the best option in the beginning, because it’s time consuming. So here’s what you do.
If you have only a goal to work with, I want you to stand 6 to 8 yards away from goal. You will then practice rolling the ball slightly forward and then use the technique we’ve gone over here again and again.
This way, you’re not going to miss, because you’re so close to goal. And you can easily collect the ball, examine your technique, and then do rep after rep after rep, which is what’s going to help you improve the fastest. Also practice hitting motionless balls for this drill, and make sure you work on your weaker foot equal to your dominant foot.
Second is doing a similar thing but against the wall. Now, I prefer this because you can also work on things like your control as the ball comes back to you. Now the only disadvantage here is you can’t stand 68 yards away from a wall and hit it as hard as you can because the ball will just fly past you. So you’re going to have to move back or save this drill for when you have a net.
By the way, get creative with your training. If you don’t have a soccer net, make do with something else– you can always find something to practice this with, and it’s going to help you massively.
Next, we are going to work with a net, shooting from an angle. You will simply roll the ball so that it enters the 18-yard box and then aim to use a power shot to hit it into the far corner. This will not only help you with striking it cleanly using this technique, but it’s also going to help you hit it more accurately.
If you are younger, you may need to move closer to the goal and that’s fine. Or if you can’t generate that much power on your shots yet, again, you can move closer.
Now obviously, you are going to do this for both sides, and I really want to emphasize that you are working equally on your weak side as you were going through this.
I can’t tell you how much of a better player you will become if you can use this technique effectively with both of your feet. Finally, the last one is to simply start practicing this technique more centrally from a further position.
You still want to focus on form here– but again, focus on technique and aiming the ball to where you want it to go. Now there are many other drills you can do– some that are more game-like– that you should definitely add to your routine, but what I’ve gone over in this article is what’s going to help you develop the technique of a power shot.
